Monsanto Fund Awards $40,000 to GlobalHack

Grant will support youth computer science programs and coding league

May 24,  2016 (ST. LOUIS) – GlobalHack, a St. Louis-based nonprofit focused on building a better tech community through software competitions, announced today an award of $40,000 from the Monsanto Fund to support their youth computer science programs, including the formation of a school-based coding league aimed at getting more middle and high schools students into STEM careers, specifically software and tech jobs. Over the next 10 years it is estimated that there will be 1.4 million jobs in computer science and only around 400,000 graduates qualified to do them.

“Our world is increasingly run by software and we need more people ready to help build it,” said Matt Menietti, GlobalHack’s Executive Director.

Over the next few months, GlobalHack has organized several of youth-focused workshops and hackathons that are available to middle and high school students across the St. Louis metro area.

“We want to get students excited about computer programming by showing them how fun, creative, and empowering coding can be. These events are designed to give students the spark they need to pursue other learning opportunities around computer science — through their school, summer camps, or even online courses,” said Michael Palmer, GlobalHack’s Director of Youth Programs.

These programs are laying the groundwork necessary for GlobalHack to turn coding into a fun, competitive sport, where teams of middle and high school students will work alongside industry mentors and coaches to design and build software to compete in local, regional, and national competitions. The league will formally launch in 2017 with several pilot schools in the St. Louis area.
